An introduction to the theory and playing of music for children and adults
Marion’s Music introduces both children and adults to the theory and practice of playing an instrument. It is an ideal introduction for anyone wanting to:
- Understand the theory of music
- Start playing an instrument
- Explore a range of different instruments
Separate courses are run for children and adults, and they are adapted to suit each pupil’s level and experience. All are welcome from complete beginners to those who have played in the past but have become a little rusty. For children, the courses provide an introduction and grounding in music that will be of life-long value; for adults, they offer a great way to start playing again and/or learn their previously neglected theory of music!
The theoretical side of the lessons works towards the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal School of Music) Grade 1 Theory exam using workbooks by Na Ling. It is, of course, up to the individual pupil whether they take the exam, but I generally encourage it. Having a target to aim for helps provide a structure, a goal and, all being well, an early sense of achievement.
Piano lessons are available for beginners and intermediate level – again, generally with a view to taking the ABRSM exams, though this is entirely up to the individual pupil.
Lessons for children are held at High Cross Cottage, Netherbury, after school 3.30 – 6.00pm and on Saturday mornings. Adults are taught during the day, at times agreed for mutual convenience.
